Brent Peterson Headshot MTEC new board member

MTEC SmartZone is proud to welcome its newest Class B Trustee, Brent Peterson, to its Board of Directors. With over two decades of financial expertise and a lifelong commitment to the local community, Peterson brings a wealth of experience to the organization. He will also serve on MTEC’s Investment Committee, where his financial insight and strategic perspective will provide benefit to the region’s innovative ecosystem.

Peterson began working as a Financial Advisor over 20 years ago with Edward Jones in Hancock, Michigan. There, he has helped countless clients achieve their financial goals. Now, as a Certified Financial Planner and Accredited Asset Management Specialist, Peterson is known for his dedication to helping individuals and families in the Copper Country plan for long-term success.

Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Peterson earned his degree from Michigan Tech while playing four seasons with the University’s Division I hockey team. During his collegiate career from 1991 to 1995, he appeared in 158 games, scoring 80 goals and 64 assists for a total of 144 points: making him 24th in all-time scoring at Tech. His leadership, both on and off the ice, earned him numerous honors, including the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award, George McCarthy Performance Award, Norbert Matovich Memorial Award, and the Merv Youngs Award. Peterson also earned three WCHA All-Academic honors and was inducted into the Michigan Tech Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Following his time at Michigan Tech, Peterson went on to play nine years of professional hockey, including parts of three seasons in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning, appearing in 56 games.

Beyond his professional and athletic accomplishments, Peterson is deeply involved in his community. He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation Board of Directors and an advisor to Michigan Tech’s Applied Portfolio Management Program for the past 15 years. He is also active in the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce and has volunteered coaching youth hockey.

Driven by a strong sense of community and a desire to give back, Peterson is excited to help advance MTEC SmartZone’s mission of fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurs. With his blend of financial expertise, leadership experience, and commitment to the Keweenaw, Brent Peterson will be an invaluable addition to the MTEC SmartZone Board of Directors and Investment Committee.
